INTRODUCTION

The Republic of Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean located about 2,000 km off the south-east coast of mainland Africa. The capital and largest city is Port Louis. The country has an area size of roughly 2,040 square kilometers, making it the 52nd largest country in the continent. With a population of about 1.27 million inhabitants, Mauritius is the 47th most populous nation in Africa. While no official language is recognized in the constitution, English and French are generally considered to be de facto national and common languages of Mauritius. They are the languages of government administration, courts, and business. Mauritian Creole is also widely spoken. The county’s economy is overwhelmingly driven by the services sector, which accounts for about 74 percent of GDP. The agricultural sector, which is dominated by sugar, accounts for 4 percent of the GDP, while industry accounts for 22 percent. The industrial sector is mainly made up of clothing and textiles. ECONOMIC OVERVIEW

Mainly driven by financial services, retail and wholesale trade, and information and communications technology real GDP growth has been moderate but steady, averaging 3.6 percent during 2015–19. The country’s GDP per capita trended upward, reaching an estimated USD10,200 in 2019 —the third highest in Africa after Equatorial Guinea and Seychelles.
